it's just my little personal twisted-fanart on a fragment of the unforgettable Carlo Collodi's "Pinocchio", done mainly with inks and some watercolours (of course made into a much more "winterly" scene than the text itself suggests, pardon me, i do have a weakness for snowy settings, probably even if i had to illustrate "The Jungle Book" i would make it snowy),
i simply had to do it, it just striked me how very reminiscent of Jesus' martyrdom scene from the "Bible" the scene from "Pinocchio" is, even with an echo of the "Eli, Eli, lama sabahtani!" calling, and i can't help thinking Pinnocchio and Jesus characters do have a lot in common indeed - just look - both somehow unnatural/"adopted" sons of poor carpenters, both at some point hung on a tree/wood, both need to do some "work" in order to fully become humans Pinocchio definitely could be Jesus' alter ego, or at least little brother
""Well," the Assassins asked, "will you open your mouth now or not? Ah! You do not answer? Very well, this time you shall open it." (...) "I understand," said one of them to the other, "there is nothing left to do now but to hang him." "To hang him," repeated the other. (...) They slipped the noose around his neck. Throwing the rope over the high limb of a giant oak tree, they pulled till the poor Marionette hung far up in space. Death was creeping nearer and nearer, and the Marionette still hoped for some good soul to come to his rescue, but no one appeared. As he was about to die, he thought of his poor old father, and hardly conscious of what he was saying, murmured to himself: "Oh, Father, dear Father! If you were only here!"
These were his last words. He closed his eyes, opened his mouth, stretched out his legs, and hung there, as if he were dead."
[C.Collodi, Pinocchio]
i was also strongly inspired by this brilliant Pinocchio-picture [link] and a conversation i had with its superb author, and also by a talk on the same topic i had with my dear erudite friend
You emptied the shop, no the entire city of your secret pens this time, did you? Great, great, great Calling him Jesus' little brother causes all kinds of strange images to appear in my head
It also reminds me that I still have to get Collodi's book But in the meantime, look at this: [link] It's the intro to the old animated series of Pinocchio which I mentioned (but beware - it's in German What will you do once you listen to it, I don't know...)
no i didn't the picture was done nearly entirely with white Chinese ink, not with those secret white pens oohhh it's in German you say? oh, seriously i'll better take some sedative pills before i get to watch it ('cause the animated Pinocchio on my computer screen might be in danger)
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More
