Artist's Comments

just a little miniature picture that i drew firstly because i had a pearl to spare from my old broken earrrings and i wanted to try incorporating it into some picture (i'll probably move it to scraps later on)

oh, and i think I owe Johannes Vermeer and his "Girl with a Pearl Earring" thanks for inspring the title:bow:

So lovely! I love the incorporation of the pearl and the details of the sea-creatures and sky-fish are stunning. The mermaid looks so sad, I wonder if she loved him (or did that to him)
It's such an interesting image, I'd love to hear the story that goes with it!

I can't help but wonder who the boy is...did he fall from some ship? A young ship hand, perhaps? Or somebody who drowned himself over some sorrowful matter? Did fishes start to gnaw away his flesh, leaving only the pretty head?

It's a wonderful scene - one can see that you have firsthand experience of the deeps ;) (or that you'd love to go and swim there once :)) The mess of riches on the sea floor, crabs, barnacles...the desperate but somehow patient expression of the beautiful mermaid...and the great stoic fishes :w00t:

Did you know?
'Full fathom five thy father lies:
Of his bones are coral made;
Those are pearls that were his eyes:
Nothing of him that doth fade,
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange.
Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell:
Hark! now I hear them, - Ding-dong, bell.'

Perhaps we need to have dreams so wild they make us think we can't achieve them, but inspiring enough to make us try...

The little fishies remind me of hearts.

I love how each time I look at this, different scenarios run through my head about what could have happened. Most of them conclude to be love stories gone wrong.

Excellent, m'dear, as always!

Don't move it to scraps. The fact you've used a real pearl adds a really life-like streak to the image - you couldn't get that same shine with paint. You should do this kind of thing more often.
